I am having trouble opening Office '16 documents to edit from SharePoint '10.  Depending on the browser, I have different errors that occur.  In Chrome, I get the error, "The document could not be opened for editing. A Microsoft SharePoint Foundation compatible application could not be found to edit the document." Internet Explorer (32-bit), will actually launch the office product but will not open the actual document.

Hi drmccarty,

Can you open the 10 documents from the office client?

Does the issue exists in all 16 documents?

It is suggested to use IE with SharePoint products for better compatibility.

Please add the SharePoint 2010 site to the compatibility view in the Internet Explorer:

Tools > Compatibility View settings->Add your SharePoint website to the compatibility view. Or check the box "display all websites in compatibility view".

Verify the “Sharepoint OpenDocuments Class” add-on is installed and enabled. If it is not reinstall Office.

This did not resolve my issue.

I thought that root cause was an issue with the SharePoint OpenDocument Add-on, but after reinstalling Office I continue to have the same issue.

Hi drmccarty,

There might be some compatibility issues between SharePoint 2010 and office 2016.

As an suggestion, you can install office 2010 instead of office 2016.
