Question

Trachodon on Fri, 06 Dec 2013 06:56:20

I've installed Office Developer Tools for Visual Studio 2012(Available with Office 2013 and .NET Framework 4.5 support). The projects Word Document 2013 and Excel Add-In 2013 are created well, but when I try to create Excel Workbook 2013 project or Excel Template 2013 project I get the error:Can not open project. Workbook Excel is missing or damaged. I try to repair and reinstall Office 2013,VS 2012 and VSTO but it didn't help. Also I've cheked my Excel settings as it's explained in this link:msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb386131.aspx, and all settings are good.

Hello Trachodon,

It looks like something is wrong with your PC.

I have Office 2013 and Windows 8.1 installed on the PC. Just tested the described above scenario on my PC, all wizards in Visual Studio 2013 work like a charm. I didn't find anything strange on my way. It looks like you need to repair your PC (re-install Windows).

Thank you for very useful advice, but it is not suitable for me.

Hello Trachodon,

Anyway, please take a look at the How to refresh, reset, or restore your PC article. Pay a special attention to the Refresh your PC without affecting your files section. In that case you don't need to re-install or re-activate windows.

My OS is Windows 7, but your link is about Windows-8. And if the problem is related with my PC why Word Document  Project creates witout any error?

Hi Tachodon,

Sorry, it looks like you didn't mention the OS in your initial post and I thought that you have the latest version installed.

Anyway, something is wrong with your PC. May be some of the windows registry entries are missing or Visual Studio can't find or instantiate required objects and files. That is why I recommended re-installing the OS.

Do you have the latest updates (or service packs) installed for the OS, Office and Visual Studio? VS2012 SP4?

BTW Do you have any antivirus software set up and enabled?

Trachodon on Sun, 08 Dec 2013 15:15:13

I have VS2012 SP4. When I try to create Excel Workbook Project I deactivate my antivirus. The result is the same.

In that case I can't suggest anything essential.

Could you please take a screenshot of the error message you get in Visual Studio when you try to create a new project? Did you try to run Visual Studio as an administrator? Do you get the error only with document level customization projects?

Hi Trachodon

When creating an Excel workbook project I believe Excel interacts with your personal workbook (xlb?) If that is damaged in some way, VSTO isn't able to create a new workbook in the Designer. Can you locate such a file on your machine and rename it, see if that helps?

1. I run VS as administrator

2. When I create WordDocumentProject everything is ok.

I can't insert images, so I'll give your links:

Hi,

I create project and choose create a new excel workbook-xslx, not xslb (see link above). And VS can't create Excel Workbook, but  it creates Word Documen project well.

You misunderstood my message.

Your *.xlb file could be damaged. This will prevent VSTO from creating a new Workbook project. Renaming the file will prevent the damaged file from interfering with VSTO - if that is, indeed the problem. But you have to try it in order to find out...

Hi,

I've found only one xlb file on my computer:C:\Users\admin\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Excel\Excel15.xlb. If I rename or delete it then it's recreated when I create new Workbook Excel Project, but the error stays.

I'm sorry that didn't help :-(

The only other thing that occurs to me, at this point, would be to try under a new user profile. Possibly, something in your configuration is damaged and preventing this.
