Question

In SharePoint Server 2013, we have created a content type which has the following four required fields:

  • Document Type - Choice field (drop-down - single value)
  • Classification - Choice field (drop-down - single value)
  • Date - Date field
  • Topics - Choice field (check boxes - allows multiple values)

When creating a new document in a document library which uses this content type, as expected, the user is prompted to input the required fields. When opening the Web File Properties window, we get the following (which is fine):

However, in the event that we leave one of the required fields empty, the Web File Properties changes such that the first required field left empty is now renamed to "0" (like below - from "Document Type" to "0"). In order to fix this we have to update the required properties from the Properties (under the File tab) and access the "Show Details" for the multi-valued "Topics" field in order to update its value.

I have tried creating a new content type and testing the same thing and got the same thing both in Office 365 as well as On Premise (SharePoint 2013). Is there someone who might have experienced this same issue, and if there's a resolution for this?

Hi _chrisp,

I have done a test in my SharePoint 2013 and I cannot reproduce your issue.

I create the following four site columns and set all of them have no default value.

  • Document Type - Choice field (drop-down - single value)
  • Classification - Choice field (drop-down - single value)
  • Date - Date field
  • Topics - Choice field (check boxes - allows multiple values)

I create a document content type named "doc1" which inherit from document content type.

I add the four required columns in the doc1 content type.

I add the doc1 content type in a document library.

When I create document and leave one of the required fields empty, the Web File Properties looks like the following:

Hi Lisa,

Thanks for taking your time to test this out. Just to be sure, I tried to replicate this issue again using the following setups:

  • SharePoint Server 2013 15.0.4719.1000 and MS Word 2016 16.0.4639.1000 (64-bit)
  • SharePoint Server 2013 16.0.4639.1000 and MS Word 2016 16.0.9126.2191 (32-bit)

In each one of them I created a vanilla team site which does not include our customizations, and created a new content type (inheriting from the base Document content type) which contains the four site columns defined previously. A new document library was created with versioning and content types enabled. The new content type was assigned to the document library as the only content type for the library and on creating of a new document, the label of the first required field left empty was changed to 0. I tried another test with versioning disabled but still got the same results.

I also tried this on a document library created in a new team site in our Office 365 environment (Version 16.0.0.7723, from the "MicrosoftSharePointTeamServices" response header key) and got the same thing with MS Word 2016 16.0.9126.2191 (32-bit).

Thanks.
