Upgrade 2008 SP2 Workgroup X64 to 2012 Web X64

Question

Hi,

We need to upgrade around 30 installs of SQL 2008 workgroup edition to 2012 Web edition.

According to this msdn article, if I understand correctly, this is a supported upgrade path if

1. It's the same architecture (no 32bit to 64bit)

2. At least Servicepack 2 required

https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143393(v=sql.110).aspx

The setups I'm trying to upgrade are 64bit, and running at least servicepack 2. However, the upgrade fails on the '2012 supported feature upgrade' check. The detailed log states the following:

(14) 2015-01-21 00:29:23 Slp: -- SkuUpgradeRule : Found feature package  'sql_engine_core_inst_ctp6_Cpu64' with SkuValue=WORKGROUP (Workgroup) ProductVersion=10.2.4000.0

(14) 2015-01-21 00:29:23 Slp: -- SkuUpgradeRule : Rule 'Cluster_FeatureDownGradeCheck' found sourceVersion 10.0.0 and edition WORKGROUP for feature package 'sql_engine_core_inst_Cpu64'.

(14) 2015-01-21 00:29:23 Slp: -- SkuPublicConfigObject : ValidateSkuMatrix checking sku matrix for sourceVersion=10.0.0 sourceEdition=WORKGROUP (Workgroup) sourceArchitecture=X64 targetEdition=WEB (Web) targetArchitecture=X64

(14) 2015-01-21 00:29:23 Slp: -- SkuPublicConfigObject : ValidateSkuMatrix source and target architecture match.

(14) 2015-01-21 00:29:23 Slp: -- SkuPublicConfigObject : ValidateSkuMatrix did not find a match in sku matrix .

An attempt to upgrade to 2014 web edition resulted in the same condition; except for some reason the sourceEdition does get detected correctly:

sourceVersion=10.0.0 sourceEdition=Invalid () sourceArchitecture=X64 targetEdition=WEB (Web) targetArchitecture=X64

I've tested this scenario multiple times (including first upgrading to 2008r2 workgroup edition) , with clean installs on newly created VM's, always ending in the same failure.

What am I missing here ?

Thanks for any help in advance !

Kind regards,

Edwin

Hello,

Are you trying to upgrade without providing a product key? Try upgrading using the command prompt and provide a product key.

Setup.exe /q /ACTION=upgrade /INSTANCENAME=InstanceName /PID=ProductKey

Hope this helps.

Instead of trying to upgrade to Slipstream 2012 , could you try to upgrade to SQL 2012 RTM and then do the update for sp2?

Hello,

Please, you need to match the following operating system settings to the language of SQL Server (US English):  (1) operating system user interface setting, (2) the operating system user locale setting and (3) the system locale setting.

Hope this helps.

Hi Alberto, Ashwin,

Thanks for the suggestions. I've changed the locale; but the results are the same both with web RTM (SW_DVD9_SQL_Svr_Web_Ed_2012_English_MLF_X17-97045.ISO) and slipstream sp2 (SW_DVD9_SQL_Svr_Web_Ed_2012w_SP2_64Bit_English_-2_MLF_X19-75032.ISO )

I can however upgrade to 2012 standard edition (SW_DVD9_SQL_Svr_Standard_Edtn_2012w_SP2_64Bit_English_-2_MLF_X19-75010.ISO) on the same installation without any issues.

It even works when I provide the standard edition key in the web version installer. Offcourse I do end up with a standard edition in that case, which isn't wanted.

According to https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143393.aspx , upgrading from workgroup editions to web editions isn't supported before sql 2012.  Are we sure this isn't simply a mistake in the documentation for the 2012/2014 versions ? Did anyone succesfully upgrade 2008 workgroup to 2012/2014 web ?

With kind regards,

Edwin

Hello,

Examining the document I noticed you cannot perform an edition upgrade from SQL Server 2008/2008 R2 Workgroup Edition to Web Edition (same version). So it should be an error on the documentation: SQL Server setup does not support upgrading from Workgroup Edition to Web Edition.

I created the following bug thread in Microsoft Connect to let the Documentation team know that they should correct the article.

https://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/feedback/details/1115498

Hope this helps.
