Hello,

Is there something specific you're wanting to accomplish?  The amount of farms you have can vary based on your usage and org governance.  In a general you can have one farm that serves content both internally and externally.  You would want to have a farm for QA and at least a sand box farm for developers.

Hi Elfuogo

based on the size and topology requirements we need to categorize a farm as small, medium, or large. Also cross farm configuration also can eb configured by running services liks MMS,userProfile and Search in one farm and other web apps in another farm itself.

Physical architecture section of the following url might help you.
