Hi,

Please let me know whether

1. SQL Server 2008 /2008 R2 which types of support is ended. Whether we can continue using SQL Server 2008 / 2008 R2 or it has to be upgraded, because some  applications are still compatible with SQL Server 2008 only and not higher version. Please share Microsoft link for SQL Server 2008 / 2008 R2 Support if you have any

2. Suppose we have SQL Serve 2016 Enterprise Edition License. Downgrade rights are available or not for installation SQL Server 2014 Enterprise Edition Core- base,  SQL Server 2012 Enterprise Edition Core-base , SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Edition and SQL Server 2008 Enterprise Edition.

Thanks in advance

Let me try to help on this:

1. According to MS (https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/sqlreleaseservices/end-of-mainstream-support-for-sql-server-2008-and-sql-server-2008-r2/), SQL 2008/R2 has already end of mainstream support and in its extended support, which will ends in July 2019. So you still have some time for upgrade

2. If you have SQL 2016 license with SA, you do have downgrade rights to 2014/2012 with same edition (eg. Enterprise). And yes, you can use it as SQL 2008 R2 Enterprise, but you might need to watch out for the costing, as 2016 is using core base for Enterprise but SQL 2008 R2 is not, so you might end up paying more. Best is to contact a MS sales and they might have other options for you.

Hope this helps.
