Sharepoint 2010 Question
I was in a debate with a colleague about sharepoint restore. I understand that there are bunch of things that need to be backed up like GAC, hive, etc but we do not have complex apps. We are using sharepoint as internal portal and there are external facing sites which just disseminate information.
So the debate was if I backup the content DB of form A webapp and create a new web app on Farm B and restore Farm A content DB on to Farm B content DB , will that work.
What is the importance of service application DB's. Is it ok if I just turn on service applications related to this webapp on Farm B or do I need to restore the DB's too.
I understand the search and managed metadata service DB's ,,,Can you please give me examples of other services for which DB needs to be backed and restored.

if you don't back up the app server you will have issues with service accounts and web configs for the farm solution itself.
Recommended to take backup of both app and DB, the content db will give you most of the content you are looking for but you will struggle with functionality until you re-register other supporting services and service proxies to work with it.

Based on your description, my understanding is that you want to restore Content Database to a different farm.
Here are two similar posts, you can use as a reference:

I am ok with you about content db back up from FARM A to FARM B.
one more things that you need to check the Farm version and based on that you can downlaod the service pack and patch to your new version
and you need to take backup of all content db and other service application dB to restore the new FARM
and veryfy all the service application and any workflow as you created in share point design
