Question

When opening Blend for Visual Studio, the New Projects dialog only shows templates for HTML/JavaScript apps.  There is no way to start an XAML/C# project from Blend.  I never noticed this before since I typically start projects from VS.  (VS has the templates that I need.)

Is this normal?  If not, how to fix?

My system is an upgraded 64-bit Win 8 pro (from Win 7) with Visual Studio 2012 Express.

No, this is not a known issue.

Blend should allow you to create Window Store apps using XAML (but WPF and Silverlight are not currently supported yet). You seem to suggest that you can open XAML projects that you create in VS just fine in Blend, which is weird.

If you could get in touch with me offline at unnir at Microsoft dot com, I can try to help. We will need more details like your exact install/upgrade sequence (and things like if you had an previous builds of Blend installed on the machine).

thanks,

Unni

I am definitely having the same problem, though no XAML projects, including app samples downloaded from MSDN, seem to want to open.  For that matter, only HTML projects are offered when starting a New Project, shown in this image snapshot just add http sdrv.ms/XMd9Ie

Are you able to open your project in Blend by way of Visual Studio?  That is right-clicking the project in the VS Solution Explorer and selecting Open in Blend?  I can do that as well as open projects from within Blend.  The templates are missing, though.

Mr Ravindranathan advised me that an update to VS/Blend is coming and we would see what that brings.

We just released a CTP of Visual Studio 2012 Update 2. I would be curious to know if that would make a difference here:

Please let me know if you are still have issues after installing this.

Thanks,

I have the Express edition.  AFAIK, this CTP update does not apply to Express.

I also am using the Express edition.  The CTP update changed nothing, unfortunately.  XAML projects cannot be opened in Blend from VS, nor will XAML load in VS's XAML Designer, which results in a similar error.

I am having the exact same issue on a system that was 64-bit pro, upgraded from Windows 7, and VS 2012 express was already installed before the upgrade, with VS for Windows 8 Express installed afterwards.

After Update 2 applied this morning, I still don't have the XAML project templates in Blend.

This is not a critical issue with me as I rarely start projects in Blend and I am able to use Blend once the project has been started in VS.

From comments above and my experience, the problem seems related to systems that were upgraded from Win 7 to Win 8 followed by installation of VS.

Running repair after Update 2 might fix your issue. We had some customers reporting this issue after installing Update 2 RTM after installing Update 2 CTP. Repairing the install after Update 2 RTM install fixed it for them.

Nope.  Just ran Repair and there are no templates for XAML apps in Blend.  This machine never had CTP installed.

Just to reiterate my situation.  This computer was an upgrade from Windows 7 with the option to keep the apps and data, then Visual Studio was installed.  I have a couple of computers with clean installs of Windows 8 and, of course, the Blend templates are fine.
